Back Pain Treatment

The back is comprised of nerves, tendons, ligaments, bones and shock absorbing discs. Its upper part is the cervical region made up of 6 vertebrae. This upper region bares the weight of the head and is prone to stress. The middle part of the back is the thoracic region and is prone to poor posture. The lower part of the back is made up of 5 vertebrae and supports the entire weight of the upper body. This region is under continuous pressure.

The Regions of the Back: Types and Causes of Injury

Back injuries can be caused by a variety of reasons, including car accidents, sports injuries, workplace incidents and spinal medical conditions. Whiplash is a frequent injury in accidents, which occurs in the cervical region. The impact of a collision forces the head and neck forward and backward into a distorted position and can cause whiplash or disc herniation. The symptoms of whiplash include neck pain, stiffness, headaches and shoulder pain. Poor posture can lead to an abnormal curving of the spine and result in moderate back pain and tenderness in the back. Common causes of lower back pain are herniated disc, osteoarthritis and heavy lifting or twisting. With a herniated disc, the inner gel of the disc leaks out and can compress the sciatic nerve. It causes a condition known as sciatica and often presents with back pain that radiates to the legs and feet. Osteoarthritis causes the discs to break down causing inflammation, muscle spasms and sometimes sciatica.

Raveling Chiropractic Center: Your Dunedin Chiropractor

Dr. Raveling of the Raveling Chiropractic Center is your Dunedin chiropractor who has successfully treated back pain from a wide variety of causes. He offers a non-invasive and multi-faceted approach to healing with an individualized treatment plan targeted to address the root cause of your back pain. Patient treatment plans may include chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy and massage therapy. Depending on your condition, he may use the chiropractic manual adjustment, flexion distraction or Gonstead technique. With manual adjustments, Dr. Raveling realigns the spinal components back to its proper position. Often, patients experience some level of pain relief after the first adjustment.

Physical therapy entails both active and passive treatment. Patients engage in corrective exercises to build muscle strength, improve range of motion and improve daily function. Passive treatments include hot or cold therapy to reduce inflammation, ultrasound and laser therapy to accelerate healing and electric muscle stimulation to enhance range of motion. With massage therapy, the muscles are relaxed and circulation is enhanced to deliver nutrients to the injured area for faster healing.

  • "I had major lower back pain caused by poor seating on airline flight. I have to travel two weeks a month and the seating often throws my back out. I get adjusted once a month and my back is now pain free!!! I wouldn't miss a session for anything!"

  • "I came to Dr. Raveling's office with severe back pain. I could not straighten up or sit and could hardly walk. I have had some back problems for years but not this bad. Only chiropractic helps. I came to Dr. Ravelling's expecting to be helped with walking and sitting and to live a more normal life. I come in whenever my back hurts as I have arthritis. I am 99% better as a result of treating with Dr. Raveling."
